About: Once in a while there is a dog that comes along that is not exactly a beagle...but beagle adjacent and their story tugs at your heart strings.
Meet Drifter....Drifter is a 1 &1 /2 year old, 53 pound hound mix. He was found roaming the streets of a small Virginia town in August. He had been wandering for several months, was fearful of people and avoided all the traps set to catch him. Local Animal Control worked with the local shelter and after some time, they were finally able to catch him.
What they encountered once caught was heartbreaking. Drifter was obviously on his own for a very long time. He had a puppy collar on that was now deeply embedded in his neck. Drifter was taken to a local veterinarian to have the collar surgically removed. We are grateful he was caught when he was as we have been told, had the collar not been surgically removed when it was, he would have died on the streets.
The shelter staff worked hard to care for Drifter and his wound. He went through weeks of hydrotherapy and daily dressing changes to heal. He was a trooper through it all. He allowed the shelter staff to bath him daily and loved the attention. Drifter has come a long way since he was rescued from a life on the street. He quickly learned that people could be kind and caring. He has also learned that cheese and peanut butter are pretty amazing!
Drifter has done well with the other dogs he has met, smaller and larger. He seems to be ok with cats and children over 13. He walks well on a leash and loves car rides, especially if they take him to a drive-thru! Drifter will be arriving in early December.
